ROWING - SLIPPER SPIRIT'S FIRST BIRTHDAY PARTY - Friday 18 October

Published 19:45 on 20 Oct 2024

The rowing group celebrated Spirit's first year in the Slipper bar. Marese Pitman, partner of one of our rowers, Alan Harding, made a fantastic Birthday Cake. It was a sight to see - wavy blue icing for the sea, topped by four suitably attired rowers and a cox , all sporting our Slipper "greens". And there was a seal, which we often see when we're rowing! As the cake was sliced, our happy band sang "Happy Birthday Spirit" - It's hard to believe but it is now a year since we were so fortunate in getting Slipper Spirit. A definite cause for celebration.

Angie and John HB were there to celebrate, having played a major role in making the case for ESSC to buy "Slipper Spirit" - See photo! This has been more than justified by the incredible number of rowing outings, and several competitive racing regattas, including "The Great River Race" on The Thames. The introduction of Rowing to Slipper Sailing Club has been very popular, with many members loving this new club activity, HAPPY BIRTHDAY - SLIPPER SPIRIT !

The next day, 19th October, celebrations continued, as we entered four teams for Chichester Yacht Club's Celtic Longboat Challenge Regatta . This was four sprint races over a set course, which despite us having glorious sunshine made for tough races against tide and a strong breeze. Our teams rowed brilliantly, and as usual the camaraderie and atmosphere was wonderful between all the Clubs despite fierce determination to win!

The noise level and tone changed when prizes were given out by the truly inspirational Alex Lewis a quadruple amputee. He told his story, which was extremely humbling but he's a hugely positive man, and now spends his life raising funds to help others in his situation. And he's also now addicted to rowing, so he loved being amongst our exhausted crews. Another great day.

Next Celtic Challenge Regatta is 2nd November at Northney Marina. Come and join us to enjoy the fun.
