Published 11:40 on 5 Jul 2024
D-zeros Europeans and nationals hosted at Weymouth with 10 from emsworth making up part of the 40 Entries. All 12 races were completed. For the first time for most of the fleet the race officer was using video camera and drone footage for OSC 's. All the starts can been seen here
Day 1: (start of European Championship)
3 races completed with the sailors confronted by a big day of sailing in the bay 23 building to 28 knots with the wind from the west creating big waves as we sailed on the far shore. This was big Dave's day, 10, 8, 8! All sailors launched however due to broken boats not all managed to completed each race. Adam posted 6, 3, 4 which is impressive after forgetting how a fleet race start works! James Jenkins also sailed very well getting top ten in each race. Everyone else had a mixed day but was enjoyed by all and recovery beers were shared over racing stories after the 1h sail home!
Day 2: (start of the Nationals Championships)
Saw much of the same in the bay but it slightly eased towards the end of the 3rd race. The fleet continued to be shown how to sail by regatta leader Ben flower who now has 6 bullets (CAN Olympic Sailor). Adam was the next best after posting 2, 3, 2 which took him to 2nd overall. Both James and Dave consolidated on their result from day 1. Gareth was starting to feel at home in the fleet with some impressive starts but struggling to hold onto the top 10 in the breeze for raw speed. Tim and Simon showed some great fitness posting their best result in race 3 of 11th and 26th respectively.
Day 3:
Saw a change in conditions, the wind was much lighter around 10kts westerly and racing in the harbour with the race officer electing for 4 races based on forecast and the Scots trying to get home on the final day. The tricky conditions with the usual left side not working the leaders came out the right. Max rounded the windward mark in the top 3 finishing in 7th that race. Peter Jenkins also scored his best result coming a respectable 16th in race 1. Ben came into his own posting 8, 7, 6, 5. Adam took his time adjusting to the lighter winds posting 2 discards but ended the day with a 4 and 3.
Day 4:
Was a light Northerly with the fleet not sure how the day would unfold and launching in the rain. With 1st and 2nd already decided Adam was trying to stay in the podium places had it all the lose with a potential finish of 3rd to 5th! Ben was looking to move further into the top 10 with the battle heating up for 2nd emsworth boat along with Dave, James and Gareth. The first race almost saw a slipper 1, 2 with Adam winning to make only the third race winner of the event and Ben just pipped by last years national champion on the line to finish 3rd.
Adam still needing one more top result to fight off last years national champion (Ian) and professional sailor Jon Emmett to hold onto 3rd in both Euro's and Nationals posted a 3rd behind Jon in 2nd and 3 places ahead of Ian with rear gunners of Gareth who posted his best result showing great starting again and speed to finish 4th and Ben battling back from a windward mark rounding in the teens posted a 5th to elevate deep into the top 10. Dereck also finishing on a high posting his best result in the final race 25th. Unfortunately for James he was caught out by the race officers video and went for an early shower.
Final results can been found on the link below. It was great to have 5 boats from Emsworth in the top 11 overall showing we are actually quite quick.
