Slipper Spirit Has Her First Big Adventure

Published 15:32 on 30 Oct 2023

Less than two weeks after arriving in Emsworth, Slipper Spirit joined four other boats in the Celtic Long Boat Regatta on October 28th. We'd had an invitation from Chichester Yacht Club to race about 3NM in the beautiful waters near their club, so it was wonderful that Spirit had arrived in time for us to accept.

It was also the first regatta adventure for most of the crew, given we've only started rowing recently for some it was only their 3rd time in a boat!

No, we didn't get any trophies, but all four teams (men's, women's, and two mixed) acquitted themselves really well, and had great fun doing it. It was a fantastic atmosphere all day with all the clubs mixing together, and the threatened rain stayed away.

Dell Quay Sailing Club kindly offered for us to keep Slipper Spirit there over the weekend (for ease of launching on the day of the regatta), and both CYC and DQSC were so welcoming and helpful in getting us where we needed to be. Tracey Westercot of CYC surprised us with a gift of champagne to welcome ESSC as the 'New Kids' on the Rowing Block!

I hope our Rowing Captain, Mark Taylor, is quietly confident - because we're going to be upping our game and giving our lovely friends in the Harbour some serious competition in the future. And of course, have a lot of fun doing it!
