A few updates....

Here we go. Before Bomber was shoe-horned into the small cockpit!

Biggles Wells, that well known Spitfire Ace, takes to the Sky: A small group of us congregated dutifully at 0915 at the club to enjoy Bomber's Flypast in a Spitfire. One hour later, after Bomber had eventually been shoe-horned into his compact cockpit, we were all treated to a display of rolls, steep climbs, loop the loops and the promised Club Flypast.

During the flight from Lee on Solent (not Goodwood as originally reported) Pete flew over the Needles and around the Isle of Wight before putting on his show over the clubhouse. During his eventful flight Pete took the controls for a spell, his seat collapsed and he enjoyed moments of queasiness! The next day when I finally got to speak to him, he was still on a massive high!

That is one major tick off Bomber's bucket list!

Catering: Yippee! Den and Lesley are proposing to start catering on Friday 30 October with orders taken between 1800 and 2045 (to ensure a prompt close at 2200). To start with, Friday evening catering will be in the Function room only, tables must be booked through the website and club Covid rules will apply. Friday, Saturday and Sunday lunchtime catering will be in the bar on the usual first come first serve basis.

More details on how all this will work will follow shortly.

Bar and Quiz night: Paul's quiz on Thursday 15 October is again sold out. All I can say is that there must be a lot of gluttons for punishment out there!

Do support your club's bar and please, follow the rules and it will continue to be one of the safest and friendliest places to go out for a drink in Emsworth.


Refurbishment: The Gents are now operational. The Galley is awaiting its deep clean and new work tops for the extension. By the end of this week the remainder of the refurbishment works will be substantially complete and soon our function room should be operational. This will also need a good clean and its annual treatment of the floor before any major use.


Dinghy Racing: Contrary to the dire forecasts, Saturday's race was a light wind affair in warm and bright conditions. After a general recall the race officer wisely opted for the black flag on the second start to get us away. The patchy conditions stretched out the fleet of 40 entries with the usual suspects heading the leader board.

Sunday's race was cancelled - it was too wet and windy!

The next New Normal series race take place on Saturday 17 October and Sunday 18 October.


Ann Howell, a note from Dick: There will be a cremation service for Ann on 12th October at 11.30 a.m. You will be aware of the restrictions we have to

operate within and we will have to issue personal invitations to the cremation and sadly will not be able to congregate before or after the service. I know you will understand.

At some future date we hope to arrange another way of remembering Ann.

Commodores note: Our thoughts will be with Dick and the family on 12 October and we will look forward to celebrating Ann's life at the club sometime in the future.

RNLI Christmas Card Sale: As the Souvenir Secretary of the Emsworth Branch of the RNLI it has been very sad to see all our summer and autumn events cancelled owing to the Covid 19 pandemic. I am keen to be able to provide Christmas cards and 2021 calendars to all our supporters in a way that is both simple and safe, and I think I have a plan which I hope will work!

I have a supply of last year's cards which will be selling for £2.50 for a pack of 10 instead of the normal £4/4.25p and I will also be able to provide this year's new cards and calendars at normal prices. I will order these from the RNLI HQ in Poole and I will receive 3 or 4 deliveries in the run up to Christmas, so the sooner you can place your order with me the better. If you are interested in buying, please contact me at ronamusker@btinternet.com or call me on 01243 377186 and I will send you a list of cards from last year and this year. Each card will be numbered and priced so you can send me a list of your choices, along with your name, contact number and address and YOU will know what your order will cost. I will call you to arrange delivery and will accept cheques or cash for your goods at the same time, although cheques will be preferable. I will wear a mask and gloves.

Many of you have been so supportive over the years so I look forward to hearing from you in the coming days.

Canoe/Paddle Board storage on racking: Storage for these craft will be offered next year on top racks only at a cost of £40 per season. Craft will need to be secured by the owner to help deter theft and prevent the craft being blown off in strong winds.

If you wish to store a Paddle Board or Canoe on a top rack please amend your membership profile accordingly to book a slot and enable the correct invoice to be sent out at renewal.

Old news but still relevant:


The Bar: With effect from Friday the following rules will apply:

  • Check with Barman on the buzzer before entering the club to ensure there is room at the inn (Max 30 customers in the bar)
  • Put on your face mask.
  • On entry sanitise your hands and sign on to the register.
  • Additionally there will be QR code poster to enable you to check in with your new NHS Covid App.
  • Do not go to the bar but find a spare table and sit down before removing your mask.
  • All drinks and snacks will be by table service (yes, peanuts and crisps will now be available!).
  • Enjoy your drink and snack.
  • The Barman will collect your empty glasses (do not approach the bar for any reason).
  • Please aim to pay by debit card where possible.
  • Before leaving please sanitise your table with the products provided and put on your mask.
  • If busy please leave the club by the one way system always wearing your face mask.
  • If you pop to the loo do not forget to wear your face mask while you are moving around away from your table.
  • Evening last orders will be at 2140. The bar will close promptly at 2200.

These are all sensible measured precautions, in line with the current government rules, to ensure everyone's safety.

If you have a problem with any of these rules please do not visit the bar.

We want to remain the safest bar in town for members to enjoy a drink!


ESSC Centenary: Covid has taken some 'wind out of our sails' with regards to planning. We are hoping to get this back on track shortly.

Please let Sarah Thorsby know if you have any great ideas or plans for this year of celebrations!

More details of the activities proposed will follow shortly.


Membership Renewals: Invoices will be sent soon after the AGM. Please take your time to review your membership profile on the website and check your details are correct, including boat storage and lockers etc..

Your renewal bill will reflect the profile you have submitted/updated.

Anyone with problems accessing the members section of the website (you will need to sign in) please contact Dave Cooper or Jon Keefe if you have problems.


AGM Heads Up: It is looking very unlikely that things will return to normal any time soon! We propose to carry out this year's AGM online using Zoom or similar software. We will give you plenty of notice about the software we propose to use for the meeting. Joining instructions will also be sent nearer the time.

Our intention will be to e-mail our Finance, Retiring Commodore and Incoming Commodore's full reports before the meeting. We will then present condensed reports and take questions and queries on Zoom (or similar software).

Decisive votes may be conducted through the software, survey monkey or some such app. Close votes may require a follow up e-mail.

More details will follow shortly with clearer more specific instructions.


General Club Guidelines: Following our recent committee meeting activity to consider the recent lockdown easing of restrictions, Mark Riddington, (our Chairman) has kindly put together the following matrix to explain the club's current position. In conjunction with all current government guidelines please read the matrix carefully and follow these club guidelines, in both in spirit and in rule:

Clubhouse and buildings

Until 11th July:

All areas of the clubhouse are closed, with the exception of the downstairs toilets. If required, the toilets may be used by members who are maintaining their cruisers, or free sailing. The toilets will be cleaned on a weekly basis.

Given the restricted space in the toilets, only one member at a time should use the toilets. Occupied/unoccupied signs will be affixed to the toilets doors. The club recognises that some members will consider the use of club toilets to be a unacceptable risk if this is the case, please do not use them.

The malthouse, including the changing rooms and training room, is closed. Cruiser sailors may access their lockers.

No visitors are permitted to club premises or the boat park.

From the 11th July:

The club is hoping to open the bar to club members from the 11th July this date is not fixed, and will be influenced by our ability to buy beer in time! Prior to the bar opening, members will be advised as to the arrangements to be put in place to adhere to government and industry guidelines. Initial planning indicates that approximately 30 members will be able to sit in the bar area, with further seating on the mezzanine and outside.

The function room will remain closed, with the exception of potential use as a bar overflow area (to be confirmed). There will be no catering at the club, as the galley is undergoing refurbishment.

The clubhouse toilet(s) will remain open, in line with previous arrangements (one member at a time, signs on doors). The malthouse, including the changing rooms and training room, remain closed. Cruiser sailors may access their lockers.

Boatpark

The boatpark remains open to cruiser sailors to maintain their boats.

Dinghy sailors may leave boats in the boatpark, but on the following conditions:

1. The dinghy is being used for sailing. If you have no sailing planned, please take your boat home.

2. No road trailers are to be left in the boat park.

In the event that the demand for the limited dinghy space results in over capacity, arrangements will be put in place to ensure fair occupancy. Working parties are in place to optimise the space available to dinghies.

Bar

The club is hoping to open the bar to club members from the 11th July this date is not fixed, and will be influenced by our ability to buy beer in time! Prior to the bar opening, members will be advised as to the arrangements to be put in place to adhere to government and industry guidelines.

Catering

Catering at the club will not be reintroduced until the galley refurbishment has been completed, most likely in September.

Premises/maintenance

The club insurance requires that a number of activities are conducted to meet the conditions of insurance an example of this is the regular testing of the fire alarm system. These essential activities will continue to be performed by the premises team.

More discretionary premises tasks will continue to happen, but at a slower pace.

The refurbishment of the galley and toilets is planned to start in early July, and should complete in August/September.

Sailing

Dinghy Sailing

Until 4th July:

'Free sailing' is allowed from Wednesday 13th May, in line with the guidance issued from the government, RYA and Conservancy.

Please review the ESSC 'free sailing' summary (already issued to the membership) before taking to the water, in particular the notes on use of the boat park.

No club safety cover will be in place for free sailing, and members go on the water at their own risk. Please be prudent in your assessment of your own skills and the prevailing conditions, the risk of calling on emergency services (for example, the coastguard and RNLI) should be absolutely minimised.

From 4th July:

Organised racing is to be reintroduced, for single handers, and 'same household' double handers. The club programme is to be revisited with ESC (but preserving the H&H series), and will be communicated in due course. Dutyman will also be revised, with the objective of using 'same household' members to man the race hut and patrol boats.

Club boats can be used if safety cover is on the water, boats must be booked through the usual process.

Cruisers

Lift-in will not take place until the start of the 2021 sailing season.

The cruiser section is reviewing options for rallies and racing for those members that do have a boat on the water, potentially starting with a Haslar trip on 4th July.

Radio Sailing

Until 4th July:

'Free sailing' is to be allowed from Wednesday 13th May for radio sailors. Those participating in free sailing should ensure that they follow government social distancing and hygiene guidelines, in particular in the dinghy park.

Phase 2 for radio sailing may be the reintroduction of some form of organising racing. There is no defined timescale for Phase 2.

Junior, Youth and Adult Training

Given the 'hands on' nature of sail training, it is not possible to deliver the club schemes whilst maintaining social distancing guidelines. So for now, all training at the club is postponed until social distancing guidelines are revised.

The RYA are due to publish revised guidance for training centres, at which point the club will re-evaluate options to restart training schemes. Sailing Committee are to explore options to get the Junior and Youth sailors on the water this year, even if this is not through the route of formal training.

Bosuning

The club has a proud tradition of excellence in all matters of asset maintenance. The usual Tuesday morning maintenance sessions have been suspended this means that if any issues are encountered with club assets, the lead time in fixing may be extended. Any defects should be written on the white board in the Bosuns Shed, and also sent by email to the Bosun.
