Emsworth Radio Sailing
Emsworth Radio Sailing is a thriving and enthusiast band of radio sailors who are ever willing to share their love of this form of competitive sailing with anyone who would like to try the sport. New sailors can just come along to one of the meetings for a chat and you will be hooked.
Classes - We sail two classes of yacht, each with its own strong fleet and sailing programme on the Millpond.
The International One Metre - The IOM is sailed widely in the UK and raced in over 30 countries with National and World Championships. One metre long and weighing just 4 kg, it is a sophisticated high performance racing yacht with all the rigging and sail trimming controls you would expect on a full size yacht.
The Dragon Flite 95 - The DF95 is just slightly smaller than the IOM at 95 cms long and weighing just 2kg, it is a strict one design radio controlled racing yacht which since its introduction in recent years has gained huge popularity both at ERS and around the world. Economically priced it is the perfect introduction to radio sailing leading to close, exciting and extremely competitive racing with like minded colleagues.
If you would like to know more details about either of these yachts contact Colin Gordon on the e-mail address below and he will put you in touch with the Class captain, who will be pleased to talk about the boats.
Sailing takes place on the Emsworth Millpond as follows :
IOM Class racing - Thursday mornings at 10.00 all the year round; Tuesday evenings at 18.00 during BST and Sunday mornings at 10.00 during GMT
DF95 Class racing - Tuesday mornings at 10.00 all the year round; Thursday evenings at 18.00 during BST and Saturday mornings at 10.00 during GMT
June 2021: ERS has recently formalised its organisation and agreed arrangements with both the Emsworth Sailing Clubs and Havant Borough Council.
ERS has decided that the ideal maximum number of starters in a fleet race is 16. Any more than that leads to congestion on the race course which can spoil the racing. Our main objective is to arrange competitive but friendly racing. The fleet racing is usually organised so that every skipper that signs on for racing on the day will take a turn as Race Officer or Assistant Race Officer for one race per session.
As of June 2021 ERS has 80 members and we have decided to make that the maximum membership we can accommodate. From June onwards we will operate a waiting list for prospective members who should apply to Paul Davies at email@example.com in the first instance.
Radio sailing attracts both the novice and top quality sailors, we include those who have never sailed before as well as International Race Officers, National Champions and Olympic Medallists in our number. Some Emsworth Radio Sailors compete seriously at Regional and National Events, most simply prefer to stay local and enjoy racing with their fellow Club members. So come and join in the fun and enjoy the social camaraderie where you will always be made very welcome.
Training - We hold training sessions on most Monday mornings at Emsworth Slipper Sailing Club for both IOM and DF95 skippers. The main objectives are to help those who are new to Radio Sailing to master the equipment, to help skippers improve their sailing skills, and to get to know one another and enjoy ourselves in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Getting started and contact - The best way is to simply come along to any of the meetings or training sessions, say 'Hello' to one of the sailors and you will be quickly pointed in the right direction and treated to a trial sail. Alternatively if you want to know more about where to go or simply how to get started then contact Colin Gordon at firstname.lastname@example.org . You are guaranteed a warm welcome and lots of competitive racing. How much better can it get?
