Slipper Happenings This issue of Slipper Happenings has been sent to you twice, once on the old Mailchimp system (which will now be terminated) and once on the new Sailing Club Manager system. The new system version has a slightly newer look to it. If you have only received the old version and have not received the newer version as well and you do nothing, you may not receive future Slipper Happenings! Coronavirus (Covid 19) For now we have no plans to alter normal club activity. If you have a cold, cough or flu like symptoms please do not come to club and spread your germs. Please follow government guidelines and self isolate. Remember that we do have a number of elderly members and others that might consider themselves vulnerable. Please be considerate. Thank you. If you have concerns about your own vulnerability to the virus, it is your choice and risk whether you take part in club activities. We will of course keep an eye on government guidelines and apply them as and when required. Junior Registration I want to remind members that junior registration is Friday 27th March NOT as was originally scheduled as this allows more time for new members to be processed and invited to join us. Many thanks, Emma Robertson. TISC Chiller inter-club series This is the series that fills the gap between the Hare & Hounds series and the start of our Spring racing. Lift-in - Friday 10 April Mark Mansfield has sent out his instructions to all cruiser owners. For those of you non-cruiser owners interested in helping out here are main points: 1 Lift-in briefing: Will start at 2000 on Friday 3rd April 2020 2 The skipper or a representative from each Yacht: Must attend the briefing and be present throughout the event to help out with all aspects of the lift-in. 3 All help welcome: Non-yacht owners wishing to help will be more than welcome!! 4 Volunteer or be volunteered: If there is a particular task/operation anyone wishes to specifically volunteer for please let me know. All the usual preparations need to be completed. Please ensure you are available, don't leave it for others to do your work!!! 7 Dress your mast: Please do not leave this to the last minute! You have until Thursday the 9th to do this. Please make sure your mast is ready for lift-in with halyards, baby stays and lowers secured out of the way and lashed to the mast. Cap shrouds , backstay and forestay should be accessible, correctly stowed and temporarily secured to the base of the mast. 8 Planning & Preparation: As usual, please help us to provide a smooth lift-in by being prepared, planning ahead, renew your split pins, free and lubricate bottle screws, have your warps and fenders ready, tools to hand, loose gear stowed safely below, decks to be clear of hazards, water tanks drained, engine primed, and generally be ready to go. 9 Plans do change: As usual the lift-in programme will not be rigid be prepared for last minute changes we may alter your lift time at short notice! If things do not run as smoothly as planned you may be asked to return later in the week to have your mast lifted in by the derrick 10 Public Safety: Public safety, as usual is paramount. Please volunteer to help with this vital operation and turn up at your allotted time. 11 Lift-in Supper: There will be a curry put on by Dennis and Lesley on Friday the 10th this won't need booking as it will be for everyone, with the darts teams also playing the same evening. 12 Tidiness: Please leave the boat park clean and tidy, clear up your mess and any other mess around you! It is now the dinghy section's turn to use the park and it is unfair to leave them our mess to clear up. Take empty antifouling cans home for suitable, considerate disposal. Do not put paint waste, of any type in the club bins. 13 Cradles: Please dismantle your cradles ASAP. Work parties will be storing them on the ground floor of the wood barn once there is space. 14 Kitchen: Vivien Reed has again done the ground work and rallied the troops for this important part of the weekend. Please bake a cake, some buns, flapjacks or one or two of your many other specialities to help fuel the event. 16 Parking: I have applied to HBC requesting they once again waive the no return rule to South Street car park on the Friday, provided sufficient parking time is purchased in advance. Good Friday is Curry night!! - Fri 10 April Good Friday is a very busy night for Slipper, being a Friday night, Darts night and Lift-in night. Power Boat training Weather is still hampering the completion of this course. Noel Coussens is on the case, so I am sure training will be completed ASAP. Diesel Engine Course Over two separate courses, 12 members have now been trained how to look after and maintain their Diesel engines on a commercially sourced RYA course. This is an important course for cruiser owners where a reliable engine can often get you out of trouble. I understand the course was well received. Many thanks to Jennie Vaughan for organising. Galley and toilet redevelopment Derrick Johnson, Mark Mansfield and I met with Albert from Nutbourne Construction to talk through the programme, some details and logistics of the project. Sailors Service at Warblington Church - Sunday 22 March from 4 5pm A special service to celebrate the start of the sailing season. All are welcome! Join us here: Good Friday Darts This year we host Dell Quay SC for our annual darts match on April 10th. We won last year and it would be good to continue the good work on our own turf! There will be darts in the bar on Tuesdays March 3 and April 7, 8:00 pm onwards, so we can get some practice in (as they do at DQSC!!). All are welcome to take part - whatever your skill level. Slipper Singers We meet every Tuesday at 7.30pm for one hour in the Function Room. Auditions not necessary as we sing for fun. Bar Paul keeps the best beer in town, along with an excellent range of other drinks and snacks. Why not pop down this weekend? Please note Paul's next cryptic quiz is on Thursday 19 March. We are a club, not a commercial concern, please, please, please can everyone remember to take their (and their children's) glasses and bottles back to the bar, plates and cutlery back to the kitchen and put your litter in a bin! Old news but still relevant: A note from our - Rear Commodore, House, Sandy Keefe: I am delighted to be taking over this role and if there is anything I can help you with regarding the club and its activities, please do let me know. I have a couple of requests: Volunteering to cover a Bar duty Firstly a very big thanks to all those of you who step forward to do this. Reminder: To be able to volunteer to do a duty in the Bar, you really do need to have attended a recent training session with Paul, our Bar Steward, as there are new systems in place and we really do need to keep you up to speed with. There will be times when Paul and/or Mike Balster will be away when I will be asking for volunteers to cover bar openings. A list will go on the noticeboard for volunteers to sign up if there are no willing volunteers to cover the bar at these times it will remain closed as we rely on your support to help the smooth running of the club. If you do volunteer for a Bar Duty, please contact me in the first instance for the current entry code for the Keysafe which unlocks the key for the bar and alarm. This code will be changed regularly to ensure security of the club and in particular the bar area. Many thanks. Function Room hire If you would like to request the use of the Function Room for an event, please contact me in the first instance so that I can clarify what you are requesting and to see if those dates are available. A monthly calendar of when the Function Room is in use is now displayed on the noticeboard in the entrance to the club and will give an idea of its regular use. Rugby at the club We are doing what we can to screen major sporting events at the club but........ Although it is great that we have a number of club members who want to watch televised major rugby matches and other sporting events at the club, however expressing disappointment when they are not screened for some reason will not make it happen! Physio-led Pilates Mixed ability Pilates classes run on Tuesdays and Thursdays 10-11am, and also from 11.15-12.15pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays during term time. Held in ESSC function room. Physio-led Pilates for Osteoporosis and Osteopenia - on Mondays and Wednesdays 10-11am Antisocial behaviour Please report all incidents, no matter how small on 101. It is a very straightforward process, I know, because I have done it myself! Do not engage or confront the culprits. Bosuns notes A reminder to please look after all club kit and power boats like they are your own - because they are!!
All common sense really! Please always be polite and courteous with any exchanges. Use of the bar on unscheduled evenings If you do use the bar for any reason when the bar is not normally open. Please either use the till and pay for your drinks on the evening in question or in exceptional circumstance list the drinks taken noting who will be paying for them. Please leave a copy of the list in an obvious place for Paul behind the bar so that he can account for any shortages and collect any outstanding payment. Please also clear up after yourselves. Many thanks. Function room props: Smoking Bye law updated to include Vaping The non smoking bylaw is in the process of being updated to include vaping. ESSC Centenary 2021 Sarah Thorsby is heading up a committee to look into how the Slipper can best celebrate this event. It is important to involve all sections of the club so please do get involved. The current team is made up of: Sarah Thorsby (chair), Commodore, Vice Commodore, John Ford, Sandy Keefe and Jennie Vaughn. More sailors please. Payments to the club for subs, fees, bills etc: You really will be helping your club reduce its bank charges by paying by direct transfer, clearly stating on the reference what your payment is for. Payment by cheques, card and cash are expensive for the club to process. Activities Around Pontoons Following an accident that occurred between the club decking and pontoons by the Mill Pond, I draw all users attention to an extract from the clubs opps manual: Buoyancy aids complying with the CE 50 Newton standard as a minimum, must be worn by all persons when afloat, or close to the water on jetties etc. Non-swimmers are particularly at risk and the wearing of a correct life jacket (CE 100 Newton standard or greater) is recommended. This applies to all members. It is the responsibility of organisers of events using the pontoons to enforce this rule. Slipper Skills - get involved! We are always looking for people to help our around the club either individually or as part of one of our teams. If you are able to contribute in some way and want to get more involved with your club, please do let me know. Examples skills that are always useful are: plumbing, carpentry, electrics, finance, admin, web/IT, structural/building skills, gardening, painting, any other skills I have missed and of course sailing/boating skills. You really do get more out of your club the more you get involved! Reporting Premises Defects and Incidents Please report any premises defects you notice and please use the following procedures for reporting them: PREMISES DEFECTS Please report defects by email to buildingdefects@emsworthslippersc.org.uk. This address communicates directly with the Premises Committee. It covers our whole estate: lights, heating, water, fixtures and fittings, everything except boats. For the time being, the paper defect book in the bar will continue to be monitored until everyone is familiar with this new streamlined system. URGENT DEFECTS Where a defect needs to be dealt with urgently to prevent a situation deteriorating into a risk to life or property then a Flag Officer must be made aware by the fastest available means. Phone numbers are printed in the club handbook. The Flag Officer will determine whether it can be dealt with by a club member or require a contractor to be called. EMERGENCIES Where there is an immediate threat to life or property, do not hesitate to alert the emergency services, informing a Flag Officer as soon as practicable afterwards. Please note that our fire alarm is NOT directly monitored by the Fire Service. Members should not place themselves at risk of violence if there is criminal damage taking place leave it to the Police.
