Slipper Youth Sailing is a year round youth club teaching sailing and having a go at a wide range of water activities.

Run by an adult RYA qualified Senior Dinghy Instructor, the water activities are usually from April through October on a Wednesday evening if tide suits on the harbour or the Millpond, and we do anything from sailing to paddleboarding to windsurfing to kayaking the creeks to mucking about in a rowing boat with your mates, with lots of other fun things, too many to mention, with your friends and soon-to-be friends.

Youths can register in their first Spring term of Secondary school and usually attend until their 18th year. Youth members can join in their own right and do not require parents to also be members.

Slipper Youth has several RYA qualified Dinghy Instructors of around 16-17 years old, which is much better than the adults running things (I just manage the safety aspect !) and organise fun sessions on the water from around 6 till it gets dark, then have a social in the club and bar area, playing pool, table tennis or just chilling till 9ish.

You don’t have to be able to sail, though swimming is essential as you spend a lot of time in and around the water; you just need a sense of humour and a willingness to join in. And we’re on the water virtually every week unless it really is too miserable !

In 2015, there were nearly 50 youths registered, with a very healthy regular attendance. The new program for 2016 is available, and we’re off “flippin’ out”, then skating, and inflatable swimming before the season.

All this cannot be done without the Youth Captain Jessica, Vice Captain Luke and Youth Committee – Sophie, Olivia, Elizabeth, Nathan, Tick and Fin who organise events throughout the year and liaise with the rest of the club to ensure all the youths get as much out of the club as possible.

See you there,
