ESSC Dinghy News January 2022

Hi Everyone,

HAPPY NEW YEAR.

The Annual Emsworth Slipper Sailing Club, Slipper Shiver Open Pursuit Race.

Wow what a start to this years' racing we had on Bank Holiday Monday, when the club held The Annual Emsworth Slipper Sailing Club Shiver Open Pursuit Race. It was fantastic to see 47 boats signed up, including 27 dinghies from ESC, and visitors from Thorney Island Sailing Club (TISC) and Stokes Bay Sailing Club (SBSC). Many thanks to our visitors for making the journey round, it was great to have you with us. All ages were represented too there were 10 dinghies with under 18's. Fantastic!

Race Officer, Mike Lillywhite & his RO team, planned a great course for this pursuit race which together with challenging weather conditions & high tide made for some exciting sailing. There were, however, a few casualties (several DNS's/DNF's and capsizes, together with some dinghy damage).

A big thank you to Mike and his RO team and of course, also to the power boat teams from ESSC & ESC who were kept very busy, and without whom we couldn't have run the race.

Mike and I were delighted to present the Shiver Trophy and ESSC glasses to our winners:

1st place: Simon Horsfield and Katie Burridge (TISC) in their 2000

2nd place: Steve & Sarah Cockerill (SBSC) in their RS400

3rd place: Charlie South (ESC) in his Laser

A huge thank you goes out to Judy Plimmer for once again making some very scrumptious and much needed hot soup which was enjoyed by many cold and damp sailors following the race. And I would also like to thank my last-minute helper Noel for all his assistance in the kitchen!

Just to recap, Slipper Wins the 2021 Inter-club Hare & Hounds by a narrow margin!

Please see the full results on the website at:

Slipper got off to a slow start and their first 2 races count as their discards. ESC started strongly and set a good pace, but Slipper put in a couple of cracking Sunday Series results edging ahead in the final reckoning. TISC had some good placing but ultimately suffered though lack of boats on the water and carrying too many DNCs into their final score.

Race Officer and Patrol Boat Duties

A big thank you to everyone who signed up for duties for the new 2022 season. We have over 250 duties and it made things a lot easier to get half of them filled voluntarily. John HB has now allocated all the outstanding ones, so if you have not signed up, you should now have had an email with your allocated date/s. These will be printed in the handbook. If they do not suit you then please do use the swap system online and make the change as soon as possible. John HB would like to remind you that if you cannot do your duty, it is expected that you will find a replacement and update the system or John accordingly.

Thank you, without your help the races wouldn't run.

TISC Chiller Series

The TISC Chiller Series commenced on Sunday 2nd January 2022. TISC have as usual, kindly extend the invitation to ESSC members to join their club series.

An invitation from Itchenor SC to all members of Emsworth Slipper Sailing Club.

A day keelboat racing opportunity in 2022 for Emsworth Slipper Sailing Club members.

The Swallow fleet at Itchenor would like to invite Emsworth Slipper Sailing Club members to take part in a day keelboat racing initiative in 2022. The Swallow, the most dinghy like of the day racing keelboats, is the perfect class for those with dinghy racing experience looking for an easy way into well organised and fun day-keelboat racing.

For SW.ITCH22 the National Swallow Class Association will lend a competitive Swallow to a group of sailors for the entire April to October 2022 season at ISC, including the opportunity to compete in away events at Bembridge and Cowes. With a programme of over 120 races on offer, just at Itchenor, a group of five or six will be able to enjoy as much, or as little, sailing as they like, and the shared running cost (about £600 each for the whole season shared between six) will not break the bank. The offer covers all running costs for the borrowed boat for the season including insurance, moorings, race fees, and regular hull scrubbing. There is no entry fee to ISC club membership, and all keen sailors are welcomed. Racing at Itchenor is not tidal dependent and we can match up smaller interested groups. If, at the end of the season, none of you like it, we will have the boat back, but we think you will!

The Swallow is often described as fast simple and beautiful. It uniquely combines the feel of a dinghy with the stability of a racing dayboat. The fleet is now "the place to be" for dynamic keelboat sailing in Chichester harbour. Two new teams are joining us this year in what is already a competitive fleet of over twenty active boats giving great competitive racing at all levels. So, if you are interested, or know someone who might be, please take a look at our website at www.swallowclass.org and contact Mike Wigmore at nationalswallowclass@gmail.com

Best wishes for 2022.
