29er sailors secure 1st and 3rd - Posted on May 11th 2009
Saturday and Sunday saw 24 boats registered for the 29er Harken Open meeting held at HISC. The weather was particularly kind with 15 knots on Saturday and 15-12 knots on Sunday with sun! All races were held out in the bay in a difficult chop, however for Alex Mothersele and Hamish Ellis these conditions were mild compared with the conditions they had seen during winter squad training sessions. The first day saw three consistent thirds from the duo and with no surprise, they ended up third overall at the end of the day. But Tom Durham showed his experience in this class and got a 1-2-2 to finish 2nd overall at the end of the day.
Sunday came with the extra pressure for Alex and Hamish not to drop down the fleet, and even more pressure for Tom to move up! However they all rose to the challenge and following another set of good starts they improved on the previous day and Alex and Hamish secured a 3 -1-3 combination and guaranteed a 3rd place on the podium and Tom put in a superb 3-1-1 giving him a 1st overall !
Well-done to Tom for winning and the duo for coming 3rd.
