Cruisers Section

ESSC has a full and well supported programme of racing and inshore and offshore cruising.

Racing is organised for a single club fleet using a handicap system based on the RYA Portsmouth Yardstick scheme for all boats.  There are two series, the Phillips Cup Series of 11 races to different venues throughout the Solent and the less tastefully titled Back Passage Series of 6 events.

There are also inter-club races with Emsworth Sailing Club.

All races are open to all comers but only Club members qualify for ESSC trophies.

Those who do not want to race often cruise inshore to the venues to enjoy the friendly and enthusiastic discourse that characterises ESSC. Each year we have two cruises in company, events further afield to France or the West Country and for smaller boats there is also a very active programme of mid-week cruising.

2011 Back Passage Series Result - Posted on October 5th 2011 - PDF1
Fixation so nearly made it, but once again congratulations to Julian as Melody takes the BP Series. Last year 0.75 points separated the two, this year it was 0.25; next year Hugh...? In the following pack there were just 2 points separating the 3 third and fifth boats.

2011 Cruiser Series Result - Posted on October 5th 2011 - PDF1
After a 2 year interlude Melody again has the Series trophy. Congratulations to Julian, the clear winner by over 50 points. Only 1.25 points separated the second boat (Bobo) from the fourth (Fixation) with the ever tenacious Koto in third. The one to watch next year though is Minnetaree, Simon had some good results in end of season races.

Nab Dash and BP6 2011 - Posted on October 4th 2011 - PDF1 - PDF2
Saturday saw a great day for sailing - light wind, gin clear sky and hot! Our Commodore did well in Breeze but it was the old guard that won the day despite his hullabaloo crew! As for Sunday, the midday start was too late for the dying wind and the turning tide.....!

Yoke (Slipper Only) - Posted on September 22nd 2011 - PDF1
For Slipper boats there is a race within a race - for our Series. Handicap numbers for the Series race include the club adjustments but even so the result largely mirrors the inter-club result.

Yoke 2011 - Posted on September 22nd 2011 - More - PDF1
Slipper has once again retained the Yoke, albeit by a narrow margin. Congatulations to all who sailed in what were challenging conditions - generally F6 gusting F7 on the nose!! Any other race and it would probably have been cancelled.

Back Passage 5 - Posted on September 22nd 2011 - PDF1
This was a far more relaxed sail than the Yoke the day before. Beach Fox with its enormous spinnaker did really well and was first on both elapsed and corrected time - well done Simon.

Cruiser Regatta Result - Posted on September 12th 2011 - PDF1
We were very lucky with the weather, the forecast strong winds did not materialise and this had boats shaking out any reefs on the broad reach to Boulder. A good day's racing and a great supper, both well supported by both ESSC and CCRC.

Ladies Race and BP2 - Posted on May 18th 2011 - PDF1 - PDF2
Congratulations once again to Judith, but the fleet is closing - 8 mins margin in 09, 2 in 10 and 77 seconds this year! Congratulations also to Martin, his back passage result means two wins in two outings. The one to watch though is Baldur - she beat Melody into fourth place.

Pursuit 2011 - Posted on May 11th 2011 - PDF1
Results attached. I guess that Martin is like a dog with two tails and rightfully so, well done to him and his crew.

Cruiser Pursuit Race (updated) - Posted on May 9th 2011
The rain Saturday night didn’t seem to dilute the spirits and the rejuvenating Pursuit race back from the Folly Reach was a splendid sail. Many thanks to Martin from the Cruiser Sec for a (winning?) sail, and to Julian for hosting the dancing girls! Full results to follow…

Bell Trophy 2011 and BP1 - Posted on April 20th 2011 - PDF1
Everyone agreed the drift to Gins Farm was really enjoyable. Out of the 15 starters two boats had the satisfaction of actually finishing and getting ashore on time - a real achievement given the lack of wind. The Back Passage 1 race on Sunday was abandoned due to no wind; maybe raced later in season.

Cruiser Series and BP Series 2010 - Posted on October 19th 2010 - PDF1 - PDF2
Please see the two attached PDF files for this year's overall series results. Congratulations to both Melody (for the Back Passage) and Fixation (for the Series). Mind you it is a safe bet that the handicap of a boat that has to discard a race in which it scored 3 points has not gone un-noticed!!!!

Nab Dash and BP6 that wasn't - Posted on October 5th 2010 - PDF1
Congratulations to all boats that took part in the Nab Dash. The forecast put many off (your scribe included) but 6 boats made it to Gunwharf with another 3 returning to Emsworth - they must have known what was coming on the Sunday when BP6 had to be abandoned!

Yoke Inter-Club 2010 Result - Posted on October 1st 2010 - PDF1
Slipper retains the Yoke but only just. ESC had 11 boats on the water to Slipper's 15 and at the end less than 3 points separated the two clubs. Without a doubt it was the best inter-club event for many years and thanks go to ESC for organising dinner so well after the race.

Back Passage 5 - Posted on September 30th 2010 - PDF1
After a great evening at MDL Mercury there were only 6 boats with crews sufficiently un-jaded that completed this race. Voyeurs might find the result surprising, but not those of us in the know who really appreciate the tenacity and sailing skills that Koto regularly delivers!

Yoke (Slipper only) 2010 - Posted on September 30th 2010 - PDF1
Fifteen Slipper boats raced The Yoke this year in what were fresh but really enjoyable conditions. That said, Einstein's theory of relativity and the laws of physical attraction affected at least three of the fleet - for more on which please retire to the club bar!

Ladies Race - Posted on July 13th 2010 - PDF1
The only weather that we did not have on Saturday was rain! Fog with a good sailing breeze from Chi to the forts, then becalmed and hot off Gleeds followed by a good sail to Gales HSB. The guys certainly lost weight changing sails for their helms! Congratulations to Judith for her convincing win.

Back Passage 4 - Posted on July 13th 2010 - PDF1
This race produced some close results. The question was whether to fly a kite or not. For Amaryllis and her enormous black spinnaker it proved to be the right choice!! It was also good to see Beach Fox sail through the fleet, well almost, on her first outing with the club. On the line just 24 seconds separated the first three boats home.

Folly 2010 Series & Inter-Club - Posted on July 8th 2010 - More - PDF1 - PDF2
Slipper retains the Folly Trophy. Congratulations to the seven boats in the Slipper Fleet, all contributed to the Club's success. Congratulations to Fixation for their win in the Series race and to Melody for getting line honours by just 1 minute and 40 seconds!!

Cranwell Cup - Posted on July 2nd 2010 - PDF1
Only 3 finishers but the later start on Saturday coupled with an earlier start on Sunday and no doubt some canny sailing on the way allowed Gemma Fay to prevail. Congratulations to them.

Back Passage 2 - Posted on June 15th 2010 - PDF1
Results for BP 2 now posted.

Phillips Cup - Posted on June 15th 2010 - PDF1
What a tremendous day for sailing, the wind was so good that we all nearly finished before we had started - tea in Yarmouth before 1400 hours! Fixation read the shifts well in the central Solent and carried the day and didn't Gelig Knight do well!

Back Passage 3 - Posted on June 15th 2010 - PDF1
Light winds and strong tides made for some interesting start tactics or should we say antics! If you did not get away with the pack a wind hole awaited you off Osborne Bay, but no such problems for Melody or for Vlad the Impailer, sorry, Impala. A very impressive performance by Martin both in the Phillips and this race on Vlad's club debut.

Anchor Trophy - Posted on June 15th 2010 - PDF1
Delivery trips (2) and moving house made it difficult for Alastair to complete the results and so he asked Russ (a willing volunteer) to do them. Hopefully all are correct but can those boats signing up for any future event but not intending to race please sign up stating 'cruise only'.

Bell Trophy results - Posted on April 22nd 2010 - PDF1
The first cruiser race of the season produced ten yachts, blue sky and a gentle downhill ride much enjoyed by those with a large white spinnaker (or any spinnaker at all!). RSYC at Gins Farm were great hosts again. Remember declarations are required, within 72 hours.

Back Passage 1 result - Posted on April 22nd 2010 - PDF1
